Sunflowers are native to North America and have been domesticated for over five thousand years. The original plant had multiple heads, and over the centuries was cultivated until it grew just one large head at the top of its stalk. Over the years, hundreds of varieties have been developed, in various sizes and colors. (Not all sunflowers are yellow.)

The sunflower is an extremely useful plant. We all know that its seeds can be eaten, but those seeds can also be turned into flour. The seeds also make an especially good cooking oil, one that contains various healthy unsaturated fats and has a high smoke point. The latter quality makes sunflower oil especially useful for frying things.

I value sunflowers for their beauty and usefulness, but as a Witch, they also make fine companions for my magickal endeavors. I use sunflowers and their seeds nearly all year long in my magickal work. I use the magick of sunflowers for protection, vitality, and growth.
